Understanding Lung Cancer Screening
Low-dose CT (LDCT) is the only recommended screening test proven to reduce lung cancer deaths, yet most eligible Americans never get it.
What Is LDCT Screening?
A low-dose CT scan (CPT 71271) that detects lung cancer early, before symptoms appear. The USPSTF recommends annual screening for adults ages 50 to 80 with a 20+ pack-year smoking history who currently smoke or quit within 15 years.
Why It Matters
Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer in the U.S., causing ~125,000 deaths a year. Caught at Stage I, five-year survival exceeds 80%, but only about 18% of eligible Americans are screened, so most cases are found too late.
The Referral Gap
Eligible patients see primary care every day, yet few are ever referred for a scan. This tool maps the local screening network across imaging centers, pulmonologists, surgeons, and PCPs, and surfaces the gaps where referrals break down.
